One of the highlights of AFFTA membership is that it affords a peek at the latest research on the fly-fishing market. A survey of retailers, conducted by Southwick Associates, offers some interesting nuggets of data.
For example, the survey pegs the size of the overall market at $893 million. Total number of participants in fly fishing is pegged at just over 4.5 million (but this includes anglers who fished only once last year, and bought a license to do so). Where do you peg the real number of active consumers in fly fishing?
Most of the commerce happens in the Rocky Mountains and West Coast, and just over half of fly dealers do some level of business online… interesting.
