From California Fly Fisher:
California Fly Fisher, the iconic 31-year-old magazine, which many believed had seen its final issue last fall, is back and more inspiring than ever. Relaunched in both print and digital formats (calflyfisher.com) under the leadership of Publisher Tracey Diaz and Editor-at-Large George Revel, the magazine is poised to continue its legacy of sharing California’s diverse and rich angling culture with a new generation of readers.
The first relaunch issue debuted in July to enthusiastic applause from loyal readers and a wave of new subscribers. As one reader, Jeff G. from Santa Cruz put it: “Congratulations on your outstanding publication. It made me think of Gray’s Sporting Journal, but a notch or two better. I totally enjoyed every page and look forward to future issues. Thank you for your efforts in producing this first-class, soon-to-be classic fly-fishing treasure.”
The Summer issue honored California Fly Fisher’s founder, Richard Anderson, with a stunning black-and-white portrait by acclaimed photographer Rick Chapman gracing the cover. The high quality of the print edition, set on slightly oversized pages and premium paper, raised the bar for what’s to come. Longtime readers welcomed back familiar voices like Bill Barich, Scott Sadil, Robert Ketley, and Lance Gray, while new contributors such as Craig Ballenger, Hogan Brown, and George Revel brought fresh perspectives to the mix.
Editor-at-Large George Revel, the owner of Lost Coast Outfitters in San Francisco and a three-time international fly-casting champion, shared his excitement: “I’ve been reading California Fly Fisher since I was a kid, and I’m thrilled to be part of its revival. My goal is to bring California angling to you in a way that allows you to relax, with stories and photography that inspire you to get involved. I aim to present facts, history, recipes, and opportunities that enrich your life on the water.”
Revel and Diaz have assembled an editorial committee of respected industry experts from across the state, ensuring the magazine is filled with expert insights and fresh ideas. The committee includes Hogan Brown, Matt Heron, John Sherman, Mike Wier, Nick Blixt, Craig Ballenger, Julia Mitchell, Dagur Guðmundsson, Bernard Yin, and Rebecca Ramirez.
Fall 2024 Issue Preview
The highly anticipated Fall issue of California Fly Fisher will reach subscribers and fly shops on October 8. This issue dives deep into the history and future of the Klamath River, celebrating its rebirth now that the four major dams have been removed, allowing the river to flow freely for the first time in over a century. The feature includes stunning illustrations by artist and naturalist Obi Kaufmann.
Alongside the Klamath River story, readers can enjoy a Spotlight Destination on the Trinity River, the largest tributary to the Klamath, packed with the “what to, where to, and how to” advice that the magazine is famous for. This 80-page issue also features articles on the iconic October caddis, Piru Creek, a profile on R.L. Winston’s Doug Merrick, fly fishing in the Channel Islands, and even a gold country ghost story.
