From Bighorn River Alliance:
The Bighorn River Alliance, a local non profit organization that works to advocate for Montana’s Bighorn River has established its first central office location within the Billings Sports Plex in Billings, MT.
The mission of the organization which was established in 1995 is to “protect, preserve and enhance the long-term health and viability of the Bighorn River recognizing its significance to the Wild Trout fishery, the Agricultural community and the Crow Nation through which it flows.”
Recent accomplishments of the Bighorn River Alliance include advocating for better water management practices on the Bighorn which resulted in the Bureau of Reclamation identifying 14 recommendations for improving dam operations and forecasting accuracy. These recommendations, which will be implemented in 2020 and 2021 will hopefully work to alleviate the high, sustained flow periods that have negatively affected the fishery, local farms and recreational opportunities on the river over the past decade.
Additionally, the Bighorn River Alliance has implemented an ambitious Research Initiative effort which will increase the scientific understanding the Bighorn River that can help lead to policy changes and enhancement efforts moving forward.
“I look at this new office location as a reflection of our shared commitment to the health of the Bighorn River” says Executive Director Anne Marie Emery “this permanent location reflects the passions of all anglers and partners who are concerned about the current health of the Bighorn. Centralizing our operations in Billings puts us near state and federal agencies that play decisive roles in the health of the Bighorn and involves us in the conversation.”
The organization will be holding an office grand opening celebration on Thursday, October 10 from 5 PM to 7PM at its office located at 5000 Southgate Drive. The public is encouraged to attend and learn more about the organization and its work to protect the Bighorn. Free beer, wine and appetizers will be provided.
