“It’s been more than two years since we launched GoFISHn, and today we reach millions of anglers monthly between our site and Facebook. Our core idea proved right: hunters and anglers love to read about great trophies and crazy moments in the worlds of fishing and hunting,” said Ned Desmond, GoSPORTn President and Founder. “Our new design heightens our focus on those stories.”
The new GoFISHn and GoHUNTn still rely on dozens of contributors, though the platform is no longer open to the public. Anyone interested in posting on the site can request membership or just send in story ideas from the “contact” link on the site. Some of the features of the old site, such as the business directory and encyclopedia, have been retired. The changes come on the heels of their publishing the iPad app, “The Year in Fishing,” a digital magazine that presents the best stories, photography and video from GoFISHn.com’s thousands of members in the past year.
“As any good angler and hunter knows, to be successful, you sometimes need to make tough decisions,” said Desmond. “And we decided to reduce the site’s complexity in order to ensure we had the capacity to stay in front of our avid readers and contributors. The changes are paying off because traffic is as strong as ever both on the sites and the Facebook pages for both GoFISHn and GoHUNTn.”
In separate news, Desmond has also seized an opportunity to take a job at AOL, where he will serve as Chief Operating Officer for their tech media brands, including Engadget, Joystiq, TechCrunch and The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW). Desmond’s move will not effect the day-to-day operations of the site, which are still in the highly capable hands of editor Brian McClintock.
